Estonia – Raba Park adds 42 MWh storage as Baltics embrace co-located solar

The Raba Solar Park in Estonia is set to receive a 21 MW / 42 MWh battery energy storage system, making it one of the largest co-located solar and storage installations in the Baltics. Sunly, which operates the site, has contracted Trina Storage to deliver the system, adding to the Trinasolar modules and mounting hardware already in place.

The site combines Trinasolar’s Vertex PV modules, FixOrigin mounting systems and Elementa 2 storage. Based on the Elementa 2 platform, the AC-coupled solution comprises 12 battery cabinets and six power conversion units, with delivery scheduled for late 2025. The added storage will allow Sunly to optimise dispatch and provide grid services as Estonia’s renewable capacity expands.

“Delivering both the solar PV and the battery storage system will improve the economics of the project considerably,” said Gonzalo de la Viña, President of Trinasolar Europe and Latin America. The deal strengthens Trina Storage’s position in the Baltic BESS market, following recent contracts in Lithuania, Portugal, Germany, Italy, Greece and Romania. The Raba contract also includes a 16-year service agreement covering maintenance and performance guarantees.

Baltic momentum

The project reflects a broader European shift toward pairing generation with storage to boost grid stability and project returns. Co-location is gaining traction as developers seek to maximise asset value and navigate grid constraints. The model allows operators to store excess generation, smooth output and sell flexibility to grid operators. For investors, integrated projects offer improved revenue certainty and reduced curtailment risk, where plants are forced to cut output when the grid cannot absorb supply. (TF)
