RWE is investing around €230 million in the new Gundremmingen facility. Once completed, the battery system will be able to supply electricity continuously for almost two hours at a capacity of 700 MWh.
BNEF forecasts record 2025 for global energy storage
In the coming months, more than 200 containers housing around 850,000 lithium iron phosphate battery cells will be installed at the site. Advanced control technology and over 100 ultra-fast inverters will enable the facility to supply or absorb electricity within milliseconds, supporting grid stability. Commercial operation is planned to start in early 2028.
Navigating hurdles in large-scale battery project finance
For decades, the Gundremmingen site in the Günzburg district played a central role in Bavaria’s electricity supply. Since the shutdown of its two nuclear power units in 2017 and 2021, the site has been undergoing decommissioning. Around 400 RWE employees remain at the location. (hcn)
