France - RWE powers up PV park on former landfill

Launched in 2019 in collaboration with the local council, the project received its construction permit in 2023 and was selected the same year under the technology-neutral tender issued by the French Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE). Construction began in late 2024, with electricity generation set to start in summer 2025.

Spread across four plots totalling 3.6 hectares, the solar farm consists of 7,420 panels with a combined installed capacity of 3.37 MW. It will produce enough green electricity to meet the annual needs of approximately 1,500 households, including heating.

Local economic benefits

The Pierrières solar farm will deliver significant local economic benefits, being built on previously unused municipal land that generates annual lease payments alongside regular tax revenues.

RWE collaborated with experts to minimise the project’s impact on its surroundings by avoiding both dry and wet habitats characteristic of the area. Measures implemented include planting hedgerows, creating wildlife crossings, and enhancing landscape integration by limiting panel height. (hcn)
