The Unión Española Fotovoltaica (UNEF) has awarded its sustainability seal to Naturgy’s Picón I, II and III solar installations. Located in Porzuna, Ciudad Real, the plants have a combined capacity of 150 MW and generate over 270 GWh of clean energy annually – enough to power 78,500 households, and avoiding more than 4.5 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions.

The seal was awarded following an external audit by certification body SGS, which highlighted Naturgy’s commitment to environmental protection, biodiversity and local community engagement. Measures include using recycled water to clean solar modules, reducing fresh water consumption.
Sustainability and social integration
The project created 450 local jobs during its construction in 2019, with several regional companies taking part. Since commissioning, Naturgy has prioritised sustainable land use, including agreements with six local farmers to graze livestock on site. Recruitment continues to favour local residents.

The projects include extensive biodiversity protection measures. In cooperation with organisations such as GREFA and local authorities, a programme to reintroduce the lesser kestrel (Cernícalo Primilla) has been launched. It includes the installation of nest boxes and perches for birds of prey, as well as the creation of a centre to promote species diversity.
Landscape integration and environmental protection
To better integrate the sites into the landscape, 760 olive trees, 108 holm oaks, 108 almond trees and other native species were planted on site. An additional 87 holm oaks were planted in the surrounding area, including along the Cañada Real Toledana. Urban greening projects in Porzuna were also supported. Ongoing monitoring of bird populations in and around the plants allows protection measures to be adjusted as needed. Staff are trained to recognise and support ground-nesting birds and steppe species.

First UNEF seal for Naturgy
Picón I, II and III are the first Naturgy projects to receive the UNEF sustainability seal. José Donoso, General Director of UNEF, commented: “The Picón projects demonstrate that renewables are not only climate-friendly, but can also drive biodiversity and socio-economic development.” (nhp)
