The Tersa Group, an environmental management company based in Barcelona, managed a total of 285 photovoltaic (PV) installations in the city and the wider metropolitan area (AMB) during the first half of 2025. This marks an increase of 19.75 percent compared to the second half of 2024. The installations generated 2.8 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity – a 19.78 percent increase.
UNEF CEO José Donoso on Spain’s solar challenges: “Investments are stagnating”
Of the 285 plants, 222 are owned by Barcelona City Council, with 63 belonging to the AMB. The energy generated is used primarily for self-consumption in public buildings or fed into the grid. Tersa is responsible for the full technical management of installations, including maintenance, operational monitoring and measures to optimise yields.
Largest solar pergola in Sant Boi
A key focus of current activities is providing technical support for new projects. In the first half of 2025, Tersa advised on 80 new ventures, an increase of 25 percent compared to the previous half-year.
Storage and co-location seen as remedy for fragile PPAs
Among the projects is a new photovoltaic pergola in Sant Boi de Llobregat. With a capacity of 3.25 megawatts (MW), it will be the largest plant of its kind in the metropolitan area upon completion. The pergola consists of 7,055 solar modules across an area of 15,334 square metres. The expected annual production is 4,442 megawatt-hours (MWh), equivalent to the needs of around 1,200 households or 2,400 electric vehicles.
Expertise in private and commercial projects
Beyond technical support for installations, Tersa is also involved in public consultation. The “La Teulada” project assists private individuals and small businesses in planning their own PV systems. Additionally, through its subsidiary Siresa, Tersa runs the “Moment Solar Barcelona” campaign, which promotes the expansion of solar installations on residential buildings in the city. (nhp)
