ESB (Electricity Supply Board) and Bord na Móna welcomed Darragh O’Brien TD, Minister for Climate, Environment and Energy, to officially launch the Timahoe North solar farm. It is the first large-scale solar project delivered by the two companies as part of their renewable energy portfolios.
Ireland approves €3.5 billion upgrade to electricity infrastructure
The 108 MW Timahoe North solar farm is part of a co-development agreement between ESB and Bord na Móna to build a major solar portfolio across counties in the Midlands. The joint venture will deliver up to 500 MW of capacity from solar farms on Bord na Móna lands. The project was completed with support from several contractors and subcontractors, including Voltalia, H&MV Engineering, S&G Solar and Wills Bros Group.
Community Benefit Fund established
A Community Benefit Fund has been established as part of the site’s operation. It will support the economic, environmental, social and cultural well-being of the local community.
Green economy “very important for Ireland”
O’Brien said: “This project makes a significant contribution to the agreement between both organisations to bring more renewable electricity, in the form of solar, to communities right across the country. Last year, 40% of Ireland’s electricity supply came from renewable sources. I look forward to seeing more projects like this being delivered as they are so important for our transition to clean, secure, and more affordable electricity.” (hcn)
