Sweden: Continuous strong solar growth

The number of pre-registrations for solar installations continues to rise. In the first 7 months of the year, the number of pre-registrations was around 19,000, which is 36 percent higher than in the first 7 months of last year. Of these, 2,200 were made in July.

Svensk Solenergi has compiled statistics on pre-registrations from the three electricity grid companies that account for 60% of the market and then used them to approximate the entire market.

The highest number of pre-registrations, 3 500, was made in May. Since then, the number has fallen for two months. This can be explained by the extreme heat, which caused some individuals to go on holiday and postpone or bring forward their installations.

Expected 52% solar growth expected in Sweden in 2021

July was a weaker month even last year and the year before than April-June, says Anna Werner, CEO of the Swedisch solar industry association Svensk Solenergi.

Did you miss that? „Many farmers also want to harvest solar power“

If the number of installations were to follow a linear trend this year, like last year and the year before, there will be over 100,000 installations by the turn of the year, including 34,000 from this year. This means that the number of installations will increase by 52% this year compared to 2020 (22.000).

„So far, all the forecasts for solar energy have been too low, but this is how the curves are pointing right now," says Anna Werner.

Pre-notification of solar installations in Sweden

The solar installer/electrician submits a pre-notification to the local electricity grid company before the actual installation of the solar installation stars. This is because the grid operator needs to know that the customer wants to connect their solar system to the grid and make room for this. It may take time to get approval from the grid operator, who will also tell you what the requirements are for the individual connection. Anyone who chooses to build a stand-alone installation, i.e. a photovoltaic installation that is not connected to the grid, does not need to notify the electricity company. (hcn)
