The new solar park, built on nearly seven hectares of the factory grounds, supplies about a quarter of the commercial vehicle plant’s electricity needs. On sunny days, the installation enables the plant to generate around 25 percent of its electricity on site, reducing dependence on the external grid.

Expansion in three phases
Expansion began in 2022 with a 2 MW ground-mounted array on four hectares. Over the following years, an additional 13.2 MW was installed across 18 hectares. The latest phase, adding 3.1 MW on 4.3 hectares, brought the total capacity to 18.3 MW. In all, the project comprises 31,000 modules, 430 tonnes of mounting structures and 150 kilometres of cabling.

VW E-Crafter to be produced with 100% green energy
The Volkswagen plant in Września, around 50 kilometres east of Poznań, currently produces the VW Crafter with conventional combustion engines. Production of the all-electric E-Crafter is planned to start in 2026, with installation of the necessary equipment already underway. Volkswagen reports that the plant will be powered entirely by green electricity, with a quarter generated on site.

Photovoltaic system guarantees VW plant stable energy prices
According to Stefanie Hegel, CEO of Volkswagen Poznań, the solar system not only supports environmentally friendly production but also provides long-term predictability for energy costs. Once installed, the cost of photovoltaic power remains stable for decades, in contrast to grid electricity, which in Poland has seen commercial prices rise by an average of six percent per year since 2018.
