NL – BELECTRIC's next big build takes shape in Noordoostpolder

BELECTRIC, a member of the Elevion Group, has been awarded the contract to build the Westermeerdijk solar park in the Netherlands. With a capacity of 148 MW, the project will rank among the country's largest photovoltaic installations, combining modern technology with a particular focus on protecting the soil beneath it.

The award strengthens Elevion Group's position as one of the leading partners for utility-scale solar projects in the Netherlands, working through its EPC specialist BELECTRIC. It follows the successful construction of Eekerpolder (192 MW), currently the country's largest solar park, and marks another major project for developer Novar. The installation will be built in the municipality of Noordoostpolder and will stretch across more than six kilometres.

East-west, and soil-aware

Westermeerdijk is designed entirely in an east-west orientation, allowing for more efficient land use and a steadier generation profile throughout the day. The project also draws on the Soil Light Exposure Test, a method developed by TNO and Wageningen University & Research (WUR) to assess whether enough daylight reaches the ground beneath and between the modules. Based on the results, BELECTRIC is incorporating semi-transparent modules in selected areas of the park to support plant growth and preserve soil quality, a direct attempt to reconcile large-scale renewable generation with biodiversity and sustainable land use.

"Westermeerdijk is an excellent example of how high performance and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand in solar projects," said Dr Thorsten Blanke, CEO of BELECTRIC. "We are proud to bring our engineering expertise to a project that sets new standards for sustainable solar design."

Jaroslav Macek, CEO of Elevion Group: "Projects like Westermeerdijk underline our strong and growing presence in the Dutch renewables market, and show how we combine local expertise with group-wide capability to deliver energy solutions built for the future." (TF)
