Barcelona – Tersa plans 1.35 MW rooftop PV at municipal waste facility

Grupo Tersa, a publicly owned company majority-owned by the City of Barcelona, manages 312 photovoltaic systems in 2025. That is 69 more than the previous year, an increase of 28 percent. Over the same period, total generation rose by 20.6 percent to 5,938 MWh.

Of the 312 systems, 232 are located within the city of Barcelona, while a further 80 are spread across the wider metropolitan area. The electricity generated is used for self-consumption or, where grid access is available, fed into the grid and sold.

Beyond operating solar systems directly, Tersa has broadened its technical consulting work for photovoltaic projects. It is currently supporting 51 initiatives launched by the Barcelona metropolitan authority, covering the full development process from detailed design through to the preparation of tender documents.

“The growth in both the number of managed systems and the renewable energy generated drives us to continue investing in this business area, especially at a time like now, which is marked by strong demand for these services,” says David Prous, Director of Energy Transition at Grupo Tersa.

Collective self-consumption

A flagship project is the planned rooftop photovoltaic system at the municipal waste treatment centre (Centro de Tratamiento de Residuos Municipales, CTRM) in Gavà-Viladecans. The first phase has been operating since 2019. A second phase will add 1,351 kW of capacity, bringing 2,457 solar modules rated at 550 W each onto 6,400 square metres of roof space. Annual generation is expected to exceed 1,800 MWh. The electricity will be shared as collective self-consumption within a radius of up to 2,000 metres.

With the expansion, the CTRM rooftop system is expected to reach a total capacity of 1,773 kW. The project is currently in the tendering phase and is being managed by the Barcelona metropolitan authority. (nhp)
