A large battery storage system integrated into a solar park

The project developer was awarded the contract by the Federal Network Agency in the innovation tender in spring 2021. The solar park with more than 16,000 modules has a total output of 8.7 megawatts.

Each year it will produce around ten gigawatt hours of clean electricity. This is roughly equivalent to the consumption of almost 3,000 three-person households. The MTU Energy Pack QG battery storage system was supplied by Rolls-Royce Power Systems. It has an output of 2.9 megawatts and a storage capacity of 5.8 megawatt hours.

Feeding power into the grid can be better planned

With the help of the storage unit, the solar farm can also feed into the grid when the sun is not shining. "Combinations of wind or solar plants with storage units are an important step towards making the availability of renewable energies more plannable," said Stefan Schuck, head of department at Abo Wind.

Benefits from municipal levy

The municipality benefits from the municipal levy of 0.2 cents per kilowatt hour generated. Josef Demar, deputy district administrator, praises the relatively short period between application and commissioning. The process took only three years until the first kilowatt hour flowed into the grid at the end of May 2023. "This was only possible because everyone involved, including the district, pulled together." (HS/mfo)
