Maximising urban energy with PV facades

Rising demand for clean energy, coupled with urban densification, positions photovoltaic facades as a practical way to exploit underused surfaces. In cities such as Berlin, Amsterdam and Copenhagen, where rooftop capacity is constrained, vertical integration offers scalable solar output.

With more than 25 years of experience, Spanish manufacturer Eurener has developed products that maximise energy efficiency while complementing contemporary architecture. Its Ultra Premium and NEXA panels, distinguished by a sleek black finish, are well suited for facade projects seeking to combine advanced technology with strong visual integration.

Solutions also for northern Europe

Eurener’s Ultra Premium range, available in 400 W and 440 W outputs, is tailored for building facades. Based on N-type cells, the modules deliver strong performance under low-irradiance conditions, making them suitable for northern European markets where diffuse radiation dominates. Facade installations with these panels maintain light capture on overcast days and help optimise annual energy yield.

The new NEXA PV modules use dual-glass technology with outputs of up to 450 W. This design enhances durability and resistance, key for facade applications exposed to harsh climates. Dual-glass construction also extends service life under adverse conditions such as cold and snow, a significant advantage for northern European markets. Despite lower direct radiation in northern Europe, Eurener panels are designed to make the most of the climatic conditions.

Enhance market value

Solar facades also offer a further advantage: less accumulation of snow and dirt compared to rooftop systems during winter months. Facade-mounted modules continue to capture sunlight when rooftops are covered, supporting uninterrupted generation. Aesthetically integrated solar panels can also enhance building value, appealing to tenants and investors seeking sustainable assets.

Many European countries also provide subsidies and preferential tariffs for renewable generation, strengthening the business case for solar facade investments. (hcn)
