Energy Decentral – the next phase for solar in agriculture

Photovoltaics will again feature prominently at the trade fair for decentralised energy supply on farms. As part of the DLG Solar Offensive, the programme combines information at exhibition stands with practical sessions on energy use and generation in agriculture. A dedicated spotlight will examine how agricultural businesses can use integrated approaches to reduce energy costs and, where viable, supply electricity at a regional level.

From farmer to energy producer

Agrivoltaics is not the only focus. Dual use extends beyond fields and grassland to include the roofs of stables, barns and other farm buildings. With storage in place, farms can generate their own electricity and use a substantial share on site. The Solar Offensive spotlight also looks at routes to market for on-farm solar power.

Alongside photovoltaics, the programme also covers wind power projects and biogas plants. Together with solar, these support a more integrated approach to managing rising energy costs and supply uncertainty.

Making better use of grid connections

Dual use also extends to the grid connection point. Farms with a biogas plant already have infrastructure in place to feed electricity into the grid, which can also be used for solar. This provides a practical basis for managing flexible load profiles on site and for marketing the produced electricity.

The “DLG Solar Offensive” and “Energy from the Farm” spotlights will feature at this year’s Energy Decentral. At the trade fair, solution providers can discuss concrete projects with farmers from 10 to 13 November 2026 in Hanover. Registration for exhibition stands remains open. (su)
