Silicon heterojunction cells cut silver use to record low

Meeting climate-neutral energy targets with photovoltaics will require a drastic cut in silver use. Scientists at Fraunhofer ISE have now produced silicon heterojunction (SHJ) solar cells with total silver consumption of just 1.4 milligrams per watt peak.

Battery manufacturer BMZ establishes production in North Macedonia

Battery production at the new factory is scheduled to start in May 2025. It will create 700 new jobs. BMZ wants to use the plant to strengthen its position on the global market.

In the new production process, the individual powders are sintered, i.e. pressed together under high pressure. This is quick and scalable for industrial processes.

Meyer Burger prepares to close module production in Germany

The solar industry is still waiting for Solar Package I. Several manufacturers have repeatedly called for resilience bonuses, i.e. additional remuneration for domestic components in the construction of solar power plants. Module manufacturer Meyer Burger is now drawing the consequences and announcing the closure of its Freiberg plant at the end of April.

 Production is not yet underway. But the red ribbon has already been cut: Robert Händel (centre), Managing Director of Opes Solar Mobility, inaugurates the new site in Zwenkau. Enphase has started production of microinverters in Europe. The devices will be manufactured in Timișoara, Romania, at a subsidiary of Flextronics International.

Meyer Burger has established its solar module brand in 15 countries

Meyer Burger wants to further expand its position as a European manufacturer of solar cells and solar modules. The premium brand is already available in many European markets. Production capacity in Germany was more than doubled last year, and further expansion is planned to grow to around 1.4 gigawatts in 2023.

Vaillant to establish new production plant in Slovakia
