The certification is based on the new EN 18031 standard, which has been in force since August 2025 and supports RED compliance for the cybersecurity of connected devices. The EN 18031 series defines clear security requirements for radio equipment, covering the protection of communication networks, personal data and user privacy.
Sonnen implements these requirements with a multi-layered security strategy. This approach features safeguards against unauthorised remote access, encrypted communications between the battery, cloud and grid operator, and robust authentication for authorised users. “Cybersecurity and data protection are a distinct competitive advantage for European manufacturers. Our SonnenBatteries have long been part of the energy infrastructure, as they help stabilise the grid and form the foundation of our virtual power plant,” says Sonnen manager Peter Sparakowski.
Cybersecurity, he adds, is not an optional extra but a fundamental prerequisite for the future of energy. Certified cybersecurity is intended not only to protect operators and grid operators, but also to build trust among installers and end customers. The new EN 18031 requirements will soon be mandatory for all connected devices in the EU. (nhp)
