Solar Investors Guide #7 – Commercial storage systems

Solar PV is particularly attractive due to its relatively low planning and installation costs and its flexibility across rooftops, façades and underused land. When combined with commercial storage, it can materially reduce energy bills.

Payback periods typically range from three to eight years, depending on the range of revenue streams a storage system can access. A single unit can serve multiple markets simultaneously, with this stacking of use cases driving much of the overall value.

Multi-use applications

Most C&I storage systems today perform multiple functions. They optimise on-site solar consumption, shave peak loads, absorb low-cost grid power when available, provide frequency support and maintain supply during outages. In short, they justify their investment case.

Control is digital, with AI managing operational complexity in the background. Crucially, these systems can scale and adapt as a business grows, in terms of capacity, performance and application, helping to protect the long-term value of the investment.

The result is a commercially driven energy transition, with industry advancing decarbonisation while containing costs. At the same time, Europe reinforces its competitive position, supporting regional value creation and safeguarding hundreds of thousands of jobs.
