Second Foundation to install 307 MW of battery storage in Czechia

The hardware is supplied by Czech manufacturer GAZ Energy, while the control software is developed in-house by Second Foundation to ensure full cybersecurity and data sovereignty within Europe. GAZ Energy, which incorporates the long-established German manufacturer Geräte- und Akkumulatorenwerk Zwickau, is building a European production base for battery storage systems with integrated control technology.

Why trading is central to BESS profitability

The largest of the three projects, in Tušimice, will provide 200 MW / 400 MWh. A second site in Stonava will deliver 87 MW / 180 MWh, and a third in Vraňany 20 MW / 40 MWh. Once operational, Tušimice will be the largest battery energy storage facility in Czechia and the first to connect directly to ČEPS's extra-high-voltage transmission grid via a privately operated substation.

With a combined investment of around €160 million, the projects represent the largest private commitment to flexible energy assets in the Czech Republic to date. They are being developed in partnership with GAZ Energy, ADI, Decci, RSJ Investments and the Ungelt Group. Flexibility capacity will be optimised by Nano Energies, a Czech subsidiary of Second Foundation.

How smart energy systems keep Europe’s industry competitive

GAZ Energy, which operates a production facility in Bohumín, is currently manufacturing battery systems for European projects totalling 1,500 MWh, many of them developed jointly with Second Foundation. The systems use proprietary energy management and battery management software developed directly by Second Foundation, ensuring that data and operational control remain entirely within European infrastructure.
