Even after several years of headlong investment in green energy, Greece continues to draw strong investor interest across photovoltaics, wind, biomethane and, above all, batteries and energy storage. Within solar, alongside large utility-scale projects, a new race is emerging in self-generation and self-consumption schemes. Around 18.5 GW of renewable capacity currently operates in the Greek electricity system, comprising roughly 12 GW of solar, 6 GW of wind and 0.5 GW from other renewable sources. By the end of this year, with the addition of new projects, mainly solar, total installed capacity is expected to reach around 24.5 GW.

At the same time, a pipeline of projects with connection terms totals 15 GW, while a further 50 GW of fully licensed projects await connection terms. The outlook is further strengthened by offshore wind, with the current portfolio providing for the development of 1.9 GW by the middle of the next decade. Deal activity across the green economy also remains intense, with major investment portfolios entering the market and the sector continuing to consolidate as larger groups acquire small and medium-sized companies. A highly dynamic market is developing for services across the entire value chain, including project development and maturation, consulting, financial documentation, bilateral agreements, certifications, portfolio management and renewable and storage asset management.
Athens readies eighth renewables forum
