ABB buys into LevelTen Energy's clean-power marketplace

ABB has entered a strategic partnership with LevelTen Energy and acquired a minority stake in the US-based company, which operates a major marketplace for clean-energy transactions, including power purchase agreements (PPAs). LevelTen has facilitated transactions totalling more than 20 GW across over 35 markets in North America and Europe, serving hyperscalers, industrial and commercial firms, and utilities. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Buyers chasing value, not price, in Europe's PPA market

The partnership strengthens ABB's Energy & Carbon Advisory Services by combining its expertise in electrification, digital solutions and energy management with LevelTen's platform. As companies come under growing pressure to decarbonise, securing reliable and affordable clean power has become one of the more complex challenges on the path to net zero. "Our customers are under significant pressure to reduce their carbon footprint while controlling energy costs and ensuring reliable round-the-clock operations," said Stuart Thompson, head of ABB's Electrification Service division. "One important element has been missing from our portfolio: a straightforward way to secure long-term clean energy at a reasonable price. That is what LevelTen brings."

Moving beyond annual matching

The collaboration comes as regulatory requirements tighten. Companies are moving beyond annual matching of renewable energy and facing stricter expectations around when and where clean power is generated and consumed. Many are turning to battery storage, microgrids and advanced energy management, areas where ABB has established expertise. LevelTen's capabilities in renewable-energy contracting and environmental certificate trading complement these technologies.

Thompson added that ABB gains access to LevelTen's ecosystem of renewable developers and projects, opening opportunities for monitoring, optimisation and lifecycle services. LevelTen, in turn, benefits from ABB's industry expertise and global customer base, particularly in manufacturing and the industrial and commercial sector, as well as its presence in growth markets such as Asia-Pacific. Bryce Smith, CEO of LevelTen Energy, said the partnership would give ABB's global customers seamless access to clean power alongside capacity and portfolio management tools.

Alongside recent investments such as Gridcog, ABB is expanding its capabilities in energy procurement, advisory and carbon services. The investment was made through ABB Electrification Ventures, which has committed more than $110 million to 18 start-ups since 2021. (hcn)
