SUNOTEC secures funding for Bulgarian PV and BESS

In addition to 115 MW of new solar capacity, seven large-scale battery systems will add 763 MWh of storage to support Bulgaria’s grid and enable further PV connections. One storage unit is integrated with the PV project, while the other six are stand-alone systems dedicated to grid stabilisation.

From development to IPP

SUNOTEC sees this new financing as a major step in expanding its portfolio and a strategic shift from developer and builder to Independent Power Producer (IPP). The seven new projects will complement its existing sites in Pernik, Verinsko and Selanovtsi.

Additional funding from Bulgarian Ministry of Energy

For Bulgaria, delivering this portfolio is expected to boost energy independence and help build a more resilient, flexible and fossil-free energy system. The Ministry of Energy has approved funding for the six stand-alone battery storage projects through the RESTORE programme, financed by Bulgaria’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan and the EU’s NextGenerationEU Recovery & Resilience Facility. The programme targets grid-connected storage facilities at both the transmission and distribution level across the country to support grid stability as the energy transition advances.

10-GWh target

When Bulgaria launched the RESTORE scheme under its Recovery and Resilience Plan, backed by the EU’s NextGenerationEU programme, the initial goal was to fund 3,000 MWh of grid-scale storage – the minimum national target set by the EU. Official sources report that the Energy Minister now aims for nearly 10,000 MWh of battery capacity by the end of 2026. By mid-2025, the grid operator expects 1,300 MWh to be installed and operational, leaving significant ground to cover to reach the 10 GWh target by 2026. (mg)
