Greece – HEDNO plots near-doubling of grid renewables by 2030

By 2030, that 16 GW is expected to make up around 58 percent of Greece's total renewable power capacity, up from just approximately 5 GW in 2021. Together, the distribution and transmission networks are already outpacing the ambitions of the National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP), with operational projects across both now totalling 18.019 GW, plus a further 13.5 GW holding Final Network Connection Offers. This is against a 2030 NECP target of 22.4 GW, split between 8.9 GW of wind and 13.5 GW of solar.

Greece – half of transmission battery bids set to miss out

The next major step for DEDDIE/HEDNO is energy storage: connecting merchant battery projects selected through the upcoming call to the distribution network. Groundwork for these measures is already underway, with project sites matched to 70 substations set to take a combined 900 MW of batteries. DEDDIE/HEDNO is also examining flexible connection terms as a transitional solution, aimed at speeding up the connection of new renewable projects and consumption loads in areas facing grid constraints and saturation, while continuing efforts to reinforce the network.

Greece – decarbonisation fund to drive €4.4 billion in investment

On the demand side, DEDDIE/HEDNO's moderate scenario has electricity consumption climbing from 49 TWh in 2025 to 51 TWh in 2030. If additional demand from data centres, business parks and ports does indeed materialise, that figure could rise by a further 8.5 TWh, to 59.5 TWh. (Kostas Deligiannis/hcn)
