Rooftop solar powers Kaufland’s Croatian logistics

The retailer Kaufland has installed a large photovoltaic system on the roofs of its logistics and distribution centre in Jastrebarsko, southwest of Zagreb. The solar arrays cover nearly 10,000 square metres across two warehouse roofs.

Kaufland Croatia has invested a total of €1.3 million in securing its future supply of solar power. Nearly all of the projected annual output, approximately 2.2 million kilowatt-hours, will be consumed on site. This solar energy will enable Kaufland to meet more than 30 percent of the total electricity demand at its logistics centre.

Enhanced energy independence

Each year, the retailer will avoid 460 tonnes of CO2 emissions. However, this is just one of the project’s goals. “With the solar installation, we are reducing our carbon footprint and helping to protect the environment. At the same time, this project is a step towards greater energy independence and demonstrates that investment in renewable energy sources is not only environmentally but also economically worthwhile,” says Tomislav Šapina, board member for central services at Kaufland.

Stabilising business with lower energy costs

With this investment, Kaufland reaffirms its commitment to responsible business practices and demonstrates that expanding renewable energy is a sound choice both ecologically and economically, the company states. This initiative enhances operational stability and contributes significantly to sustainable development in Croatia.

Steps towards a greener future

The mayor of Jastrebarsko, Zvonimir Novosel, also expressed his enthusiasm at the inauguration of the system. “I am very pleased that this project has been implemented here in Jastrebarsko, as it shows how, by working together, we can create a safer and greener future for our citizens.” (su)
