Greece - Solar auctions gear up for comeback

According to energypress sources, the ministry is finalising a new framework and preparing it for preliminary notification to the European Commission, which will trigger formal consultations. Officials anticipate a smooth and rapid approval process, as the structure closely mirrors previous schemes cleared by EU competition authorities.

CfDs for 3-4 GW new capacity

The plan targets support for 3–4 GW of new renewable capacity through contracts for difference (CfDs) signed with RES market operator DAPEEP. Initial auctions are expected to focus on photovoltaic projects paired with battery storage, with behind-the-meter storage likely to be a requirement for participation. The policy is designed to address concerns over Greece’s growing dependence on solar power, while shielding projects from curtailment and exposure to zero or negative electricity prices.

President FIC Greece: “Community engagement is crucial”

Final decisions regarding wind energy are still pending, though storage is also expected to be a condition for support. Authorities note that wind generation’s more balanced daily profile reduces the need for battery integration compared to solar. Both solar and wind projects will compete in auctions to secure a reference price, submitting bids for the lowest required revenue, in line with previous competitive models.

Greece – study points to room in grid for multi-GW battery storage

Details on capacity allocation between technologies and the programme’s duration are yet to be clarified. Other renewable technologies, such as biomass and small hydro, will continue under administratively set tariffs. (Kostas Deligiannis/hcn)
