Italy:

Around 90% of the Italian PV installers offer energy storage solutions

In recent years, the Italian PV market has grown steadily. In 2021, Italy added about 1 GW of newly installed PV capacity, compared to 785 MW in 2020, and reached a cumulative PV capacity of 22.6 GW.
According to Italia Solare, Italy installed 431 MWh of storage capacity in 2021, compared to 112 MWh in 2020. The northern regions Lombardia and Veneto are particularly successful in increasing installed storage capacity by implementing specific funding schemes.

The Global PV InstallerMonitor 2021/2022by EUPD Research targets installers in selected core PV markets. In Italy, 100 installation companies participated in the survey. This year’s report provides exclusive insights on the latest developments of the PV market in Italy.

45% also offer electric mobility solutions

The results of the survey show that 89% of the surveyed installers in Italy offer energy storage to their customers, compared to 64% from last year’s survey. A further 10% are planning to include storage solutions in their portfolio by the end of 2022. This development indicates a growing market for storage systems.

Additionally, 45 % of the survey participants in Italy offer electric mobility solutions. The growing market penetration of electric vehicles will further increase the demand for storage systems, both for the installation of home charging stations as well as to support the grid in coping with the increasing electricity demand.

Simplified permitting procedure for small storage systems

In 2021, Italy simplified the permitting procedure for small storage systems to boost the growth of the PV storage market. Currently, the net-billing and Superbonus (110 % tax deduction) schemes are driving the small-scale solar PV segment. However, the country needs to further adjust its incentive schemes in order to achieve its ambitious targets for the solar PV sector.

This year’s version of the Global PV InstallerMonitor 2021/2022 for the South African market focuses on the recurring topics such as which module-, inverter- or storage brands installers carry in their portfolio, how and where they purchase their components, and to which extent they are satisfied with the brands they offer. For the first time, installers were also surveyed in regards to which mounting structure manufacturers they know, offer, and are willing to recommend. (hcn)
