Spain: ABO Energy completes 50 MW Valdezorita solar park

Turnkey projects offer considerable opportunities, but also come with their share of challenges. “The construction phase ties up considerable liquidity and, as a project developer, we bear the risk until construction is complete,” says CEO Karsten Schlageter. However, the expected margin is higher than in pure project rights sales. “In recent years, we have achieved many successes in Spain and have now developed and sold projects with a total output of 1.4 gigawatts,” the manager adds.

Camping goes solar – San Vicente site supplies its own green power

A large US internet company has secured the output of the Valdezorita solar park via a private power purchase agreement (PPA), using the electricity to run its data centre in a cost-effective and climate-friendly way. The facility was acquired by a fund advised by EB – Sustainable Investment Management GmbH (EB-SIM), a subsidiary of Evangelische Bank and a leading manager of sustainable assets. ABO Energy will be responsible for the park’s technical operations on behalf of the new owner.

Future PPA market driven by tech and green hydrogen

After Germany, Spain is by far the largest market for renewables in Europe – and thanks to its strong solar irradiation, it still holds considerable untapped potential. The price of solar power has recently dropped again, underlining just how competitive the technology has become. “For the time being, however, we will focus our project development activities primarily on wind power and battery storage,” explains Schlageter, outlining the company’s strategy. ABO Energy currently has a development pipeline of around 700 megawatts in Spain, reflecting the growing interest in diversified renewable portfolios. (nhp)
