Lynus bets on large-scale storage, made in Bavaria

The BESS Cube 2.0 can be connected on either the DC or the AC side and can also serve as grid storage. It uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells rated for more than 8,000 full cycles before their capacity falls to 80 percent.

Alert fatigue comes at a cost for battery operators

At a charge and discharge rate of 0.5 C, the system reaches a DC round-trip efficiency of at least 94 percent. It is available in 400 V, 690 V and 800 V configurations, with a charging and discharging power of up to 500 kW. Each unit takes up just over 5 square metres and weighs around 7.5 tonnes. An integrated liquid cooling and heating system keeps all the cells at an even temperature.

For safety, the system has smoke, gas and temperature sensors, an automatic aerosol-based extinguishing system and mechanical pressure relief. It comes with an energy management system that uses machine learning to run the battery for several applications at once. According to the company, the software is already in use at more than 1,500 installations in Germany and Switzerland. (nhp)
