Supply chain problems reduce sales

SMA sold inverters with a total output of around 5.8 gigawatts from January to June 2022 and achieved sales of just under €472 million. Sales were lower than in the previous year, particularly in the Home Solutions segment, because the high demand could not be met due to the shortage of materials. "The supply situation, which continues to be very tight, is having a significant negative impact on the development of sales and earnings," says board spokesman Jürgen Reinert.

New gigawatt factory to be built in Kassel, Germany in 2024

Turnover in the Commercial & Industrial Solutions and Large Scale Project Solutions segments remained at the previous year's level due to delivery difficulties and project postponements as a result of increased prices. Demand for solar and energy solutions remained high, says Reinert. The delivery difficulties for electronic components once again reflected the dependencies of global supply chains on Asian markets. "That is why we have initiated a series of measures to sustainably improve our ability to deliver," says the SMA boss.

From 2023, Reinert expects a significant improvement in the overall situation. "Among other things, we are preparing for this with the construction of a new gigawatt factory in Kassel and the associated doubling of our production capacity by 2024." (nhp/mfo)
