Rooftop solar:

German homeowners buy larger solar systems for e-mobility

In Germany, the segment of rooftop PV systems on detached and semi-detached houses will again dominate new construction this year. This is one of the results of a current market analysis by EUPD Research. According to this analysis, the share of systems with an output of up to 15 kilowatts will increase to 36 per cent of the total added output. For comparison: last year this share was 30 per cent.

Solar installations will get larger

The analysts predict, however, that the systems on the roofs of houses will become larger. While the absolute increase in the output of systems between five and ten kilowatts is stagnating, the growing share of small systems is mainly in favour of the output class between ten and 15 kilowatts. This makes it clear: the systems are getting larger.

The market experts at EUPD Research attribute this to the electrification of the other energy sectors in the home, such as heating and mobility. Many homeowners who decide to install a solar system also want to have a private charging station when they buy an electric vehicle. Of course, the solar power is supposed to flow into the car's batteries via this station.

Own charging station is very popular

Thus, 95 per cent of homeowners who already have a solar system would also decide to buy their own charging station when they buy an electric vehicle. As many as 80 per cent of those who plan to install a solar system this year also want their own charging station. Actually, 77 per cent of homeowners who plan to buy a solar system in the next few years have their eyes on their own charging station. Even 69 per cent of those who have no intention of buying a solar system so far would still install a charging station right away if they bought an electric vehicle.

Consuming more yield themselves

These results suggest that homeowners want to use the solar system not only for electricity consumption in the building, but also for charging their own electric vehicle - with the result that they can then also consume the electricity from a larger solar system themselves. Accordingly, investing in one's own photovoltaic system also stimulates the purchase of an electric vehicle, explains Martin Ammon, Managing Director of EUPD Research. (su/mfo)
