Italy – EE hands over the keys to Cerano Energreen

Italy's renewable energy market continues to attract buyers for de-risked, ready-to-build assets. European Energy has completed the sale of Cerano Energreen, a fully permitted 90 MW solar project in Brindisi, Puglia, closing the transaction on 6 August 2026.

The project holds all permits required for construction and grid connection, along with a 20-year Contract for Difference awarded under Italy's FerX auction scheme. Combined with its secured grid access and tracker technology, these features give the asset a strong basis for long-term performance once operational, when the park is expected to generate around 160,000 MWh of electricity annually, enough to supply roughly 55,000 Italian households.

Cerano Energreen sits on already-industrialised land adjacent to an existing industrial zone in Brindisi, a province historically shaped by large-scale fossil fuel generation. By building on land already given over to industry rather than undeveloped countryside, European Energy limited the project's additional land use, work that fits within Brindisi's broader shift away from fossil fuels.

What investors are looking for

The sale forms part of European Energy's wider strategy of developing and maturing renewable assets before divesting them, recycling the resulting capital into new projects across its international pipeline. "Cerano Energreen combines the qualities investors increasingly look for in today's market: a fully permitted project, secured revenue under the FerX scheme and a location at the heart of Southern Italy's energy transition," said Filippo Ricci, Country Manager Italy at European Energy. "The strong level of interest confirms the attractiveness of well-developed renewable energy projects in Italy."

Jens Peter Zink, Deputy CEO of European Energy: "European Energy's strategy is to create high-quality renewable energy assets that are attractive to long-term infrastructure investors," he said. "Cerano Energreen demonstrates the value created through disciplined project development, from permitting and grid access to revenue security. Transactions like this allow us to recycle capital efficiently while continuing to expand our development portfolio across Europe."

The sale adds to European Energy's active project pipeline in Italy, where the company is currently building the 250 MW Vizzini agri-PV project in Sicily, one of the country's largest agrivoltaic developments. (TF)
