Transatlantic AI collab signals new phase in EU digital energy

At a recent executive roundtable on AI for energy, hosted by Stanford University’s Bits & Watts Initiative, Eurelectric joined the Open Power AI (OPAI) Consortium, led by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). The OPAI brings together utilities, technology leaders and researchers from Europe and the US to develop and deploy artificial intelligence for smarter and more resilient energy systems, while setting common standards and best practices for the sector. The new partnership aims to help utilities navigate regulatory complexity and meet rising expectations around cybersecurity and consumer trust.

AI key for a changing energy landscape

Eurelectric’s latest Power Barometer forecasts electricity demand from EU and UK data centres to reach up to 287 TWh by 2030, equivalent to Spain’s annual consumption. In response, Eurelectric has made AI and digitalisation central priorities for its 2025–2027 programme, with its recent move to join the OPAI Consortium forming part of a broader strategy to accelerate the rollout of AI solutions in the energy sector.

The consortium’s objectives include improving grid efficiency and resilience, reducing system costs, accelerating the deployment of clean energy technologies, and enhancing service quality for consumers. (TF)
