Tailwind for Greek-Egyptian Interconnection Project

Earlier this week, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met the Chairman of the Greek Copelouzos Group, Dimitrios Copelouzos, in the presence of the Prime Minister, Mostafa Madbouly, the Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mohamed Shaker, and several senior company representatives.

Presidential Spokesperson Ahmed Fahmy stated that the President was informed about the progress of the Greece-Egypt Interconnection Project (GREGY Project) for the electricity link with Europe, in particular the successful inclusion in the initial project list of common interests in the European Union.

Planned 9.5 GW wind and solar energy project

This clears the way for the next phase of project implementation, i.e. the preparation of the final technical and environmental studies and the study to determine the route of the submarine power cable. The President was given an overview of the Greek group's plans for the production of renewable energy in Egypt. He was briefed on efforts to strengthen joint work between Egypt and the group to implement a 9.5 gigawatt wind and solar energy project that will support the Egyptian economy in the long term and contribute to the clean energy transition in Egypt and Europe.

El-Sisi gave a mandate to continue and accelerate the joint cooperation between the two sides in order to realize the proposed projects as soon as possible. He also emphasized the need to streamline procedures and remove any obstacles that may arise in the course of project implementation. The President reiterated Egypt's will to play a leading role in the international transition to clean energy, which will benefit Egypt both economically and environmentally. (hcn)
