Grid stabilisation

Large-scale storage facility in Eisenach brings renewable energies into the grid

SMA is supplying 20 turnkey system solutions with battery inverters and coordinated medium-voltage technology to the project. Their grid-forming properties ensure power supply even in the event of a grid failure.

Compatible with most batteries

The SMA Sunny Central Storage UP battery inverters offer grid-forming functions. In this way, with an output of up to 3,960 kVA at system voltages of up to 1,500 volts (DC), they enable more efficient and flexible planning of storage power plants. The wide DC voltage range makes them compatible with most battery technologies.

Inverter on the roof

The new large-scale storage system was planned and installed by Smart Power from Aschheim. One of the challenges was to take up as little space as possible. To achieve this, the system was built in concrete and additional space was created on the 3.5-metre-high roof for the inverters, which weigh a total of around 350 tonnes.

Although the solid concrete construction is more expensive than a container construction, it lasts longer. After its planned completion in the third quarter of 2022, the storage unit will be used to provide primary control power, for avoided grid charges and intraday trading. (HS/mfo)
