UK – Battery electric vehicles power toward 25% of market

This strong performance keeps BEVs ahead of their implied ZEV Mandate trajectory. Year-to-date, BEVs account for 22.16 percent of the market, exceeding the required 21.76 percent when CO₂ credits are factored in. Consequently, manufacturers are collectively generating surplus credits, helping to minimise compliance costs.

Electrification progress extended beyond passenger cars. Electric van registrations hit their second-highest monthly total on record, with 3,996 units, just short of the March peak. The heavy goods vehicle (HGV) segment also set a new record, with 111 electric HGVs registered in September, surpassing the previous high of 68 in June and underscoring the growing momentum in fleet decarbonisation.

Fossil-fuelled cars declined further

In contrast, fossil fuel technologies continued their decline. Diesel car registrations dropped by a third compared to last September, capturing just 4 percent of the market and marking their weakest performance for a September in 25 years. Petrol registrations also declined, while plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) grew by nearly 32 percent year-to-date, raising the combined plug-in share to almost one in three new cars.

“September’s figures show the strength and resilience of the UK’s electric vehicle market. Cars, vans and even HGVs all posted new records, proving that electrification is no longer just a passenger car story, but a transition happening across the whole road transport sector,” said Ciara Cook, Research Manager at New AutoMotive.
