Spain: Government announces new funding for e-mobility

Spain is stepping up its support for the e-mobility transition with the next round of its PERTE programme. For the first time, the €1.25 billion in funding will be managed entirely by the state-owned company SEPIDES, which focuses on industrial promotion and business development. As announced by Industry Minister Jordi Hereu in early May, the programme will continue to back the entire value chain for electric vehicle and battery production.

300 businesses benefited to date

This is already the fourth round of the PERTE programme. On this occasion, 80 per cent of the €1.25 billion will be provided as loans, with only €250 million awarded as direct subsidies. A key aim is to support the conversion of production lines for the manufacture of innovative products not previously produced in Spain. “We want to utilise all resources and continue to drive forward the industrial transformation of the country,” said Transport and Tourism Minister Jordi Hereu.

Spain should not only be recognised as a major vehicle manufacturer, but also as the place where the world's most advanced mobility solutions are created, said Hereu. Since the launch of the PERTE programme for electric and connected vehicles, almost 2.5 billion euros have been distributed in three rounds to date, benefiting around 300 companies across the entire automotive industry value chain.

5.5 million e-cars by 2030

Hereu sees the latest e-car registration figures as positive: in the first four months of the year, 12.2% more cars were registered than in the same period in 2024, with a very significant increase in e-vehicles. These increased by 80% compared to the previous year. According to the Spanish government's energy and climate plan, around 5.5 million electric vehicles are expected to be on the roads by 2030, including three million electric cars and two million vans, buses and motorbikes.
