InstaVolt is selling its EV charging operations in Spain and Portugal to Powerdot, a move the UK and Ireland's leading ultra-rapid charging network says will free up capital to accelerate growth closer to home. The deal follows interest from several strategic buyers and comes shortly after InstaVolt completed one of the sector's largest recent refinancing packages, £250 million in debt facilities alongside £40 million of new equity.
UK – petrol’s lead narrows as EVs close the gap
InstaVolt entered the Iberian market in 2023 and has since built a charging network across Spain and Portugal supported by a local team. That network now moves to Powerdot, while InstaVolt redirects the freed-up capital toward the UK and Ireland.
The company's moves on home soil include acquiring over 228 charging locations and continued investment in battery storage and solar generation. A new ultra-rapid hub is also under construction at Chicklade on the A303, a major route to the South West of England near Stonehenge. It will be InstaVolt's second superhub after Winchester, combining on-site solar, battery storage and a grid connection, and is expected to open in late summer 2026.
The CEO's case
InstaVolt CEO Delvin Lane: "Following our recent refinancing and the significant opportunities emerging in our core markets, we carefully evaluated how best to deploy capital to maximise long-term growth and shareholder value. This agreement enables us to recycle capital into our core UK and Ireland markets, accelerating both organic growth and strategic acquisitions."
UK – EV share hits record 22.7% in March
InstaVolt now holds more than 1,200 charging locations across the UK, with site partnerships spanning McDonald's, Costa Coffee, Starbucks, British Land and LondonMetric, alongside a rollout of next-generation BYD chargers rated at up to 240 kW. According to Lane, the company is working with several European and Chinese vehicle manufacturers to build a more integrated charging experience for drivers. (TF)
