Romania – HelleniQ Energy powers up first solar projects

The two photovoltaic parks form part of a 2023 agreement with Metlen Energy & Metals (METLEN), covering four solar projects with a combined capacity of 211 MW, with the remaining two projects, totalling 153 MW, scheduled to come online in 2026, marking HelleniQ Energy’s entry into the Romanian solar market.

In addition to Romania, the group operates in Greece, Cyprus, Bulgaria and North Macedonia, with a total operational output of 564 MW, and aims to reach 1.5 GW of installed renewable capacity within the next three years and more than 2 GW by 2030, while covering as many stages of the value chain in-house and pursuing geographic and technological diversification across its projects.

George Alexopoulos, Deputy CEO of HelleniQ Energy, said Romania is an important market for the company’s renewable portfolio, adding that the launch of its first projects in the country marks a step towards building a stronger regional platform in Southeast Europe. Further development across the region will support energy security and reduce dependence on non-EU energy suppliers, he said.

Athens-based HelleniQ Energy operates across the energy value chain, from generation and supply to renewable power trading. The recent integration of Greek electricity and gas company Enerwave also broadens the group’s position in the Greek energy market. (mg)
