EU Farming Strategy emphasises the role of solar

The European Commission has published its ‘Vision for Agriculture and Food’, outlining a pathway towards a more competitive, attractive and fair EU farming and food sector.

“This is a landmark moment – the European Commission explicitly recognises solar as a complementary tool for agriculture, providing energy security, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and, critically, offering farmers additional revenue streams,” said Lina Dubina, Policy Advisor at SolarPower Europe.

Spread the benefits of Agrisolar to many more farmers across Europe

Agrisolar – the combination of solar energy and agriculture – is already well established in Europe, with over 200 projects in operation. By offering moveable shade, reducing water use, regenerating soil and protecting crops and livestock from extreme heat, solar integration strengthens climate resilience. When paired with regenerative agriculture, it can boost profits by up to €235,000 a year.

“The Commission should now turn this Vision into action. We call for concrete amendments to the EU Common Agricultural Policy, along with dedicated guidance to help Member States expand the benefits of Agrisolar to more farmers and rural economies across Europe,” emphasised Dubina. (hcn)
