METLEN is strengthening the position of M RESET within its Energy Sector in battery energy storage systems (BESS), with major projects and milestones in the UK, Italy and Greece highlighting the company's growing footprint in grid-scale storage infrastructure. In the UK, METLEN recently signed a Balance of Plant (BoP) contract with Pulse Clean Energy for the landmark 129 MW Penn BESS project in the West Midlands, with installed battery capacity of 362 MWh. It is the largest energy storage project the company has undertaken in the country to date in terms of storage capacity.

Pulse Clean Energy is a fast-growing UK developer and operator of battery storage, supporting the integration of renewable generation into the electricity system. It has one of the UK's largest battery storage fleets at 400 MWh, with another 400 MWh in build and ambitions to reach 2 GWh by 2030, while METLEN's scope of work on the project also includes grid connection works, with energisation of the site expected by the end of 2027. To date, the company has delivered or is currently working on around 30 battery storage units in the UK, including hybrid and co-located solar-and-battery projects, representing nearly 2 GWh of energy storage capacity.
A first for Italy's storage market
In Italy, METLEN has secured €18 million in long-term financing for a 25 MW / 75 MWh BESS project in Apulia, in the province of Brindisi, which became fully operational within the year and now benefits from a seven-year physical tolling agreement with Dolomiti Energia Group. The financing arrangement is one of the first of its kind in the Italian energy storage market. METLEN has been active in Italy since 2017 and today holds a diversified portfolio in the country, including around 3 GWh of energy storage capacity.
Greek energy group Metlen: “Italy is a core market for us”
In Greece, in partnership with Karatzis Group of Companies, METLEN has developed the largest standalone battery storage unit planned to date in the country and one of the biggest in Europe. Located in the Thessaly region, the project has a capacity of 330 MW and installed battery capacity of 790 MWh, with its output now integrated into the national electricity transmission system. At the same time, a 48 MW / 96 MWh battery storage project was recently completed in Polygyros, Halkidiki, in Central Macedonia. The "Aenaos" project was implemented under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan "Greece 2.0", with funding from the European Union / NextGenerationEU.
METLEN goes shopping for software with Joule deal
Together, these projects reflect how central battery storage has become to METLEN's energy strategy. The technology underpins renewable integration, adds flexibility and stability to the grid, strengthens energy security and helps reduce curtailment. (hcn)
