BW ESS has acquired two battery storage projects in the Valencia region from Spanish developer Navacant that together deliver a combined output of 126 MW and up to 675 MWh of capacity, split between a 99 MW and a 27 MW site.

The projects have been in development for around 18 months, with ready-to-build status expected in 2027 and commissioning planned for 2028. BW ESS intends to operate the assets itself over the long term.
CST Energy to continue development
CST Energy, a Navacant partner, will take the projects through to ready-to-build status, before BW ESS assumes responsibility for construction and operation. Isaac García Moreno, Executive Director at BW ESS, outlined the strategy behind the move: "We are targeting significant growth in our Spanish energy storage platform through a combination of greenfield development and acquisitions of high-quality projects at an advanced stage."

García Moreno pointed to Navacant's track record and the projects' fundamentals, including their large scale and symmetric grid access rights, as a strong fit for BW ESS's strategy of building a diversified, high-performing storage portfolio, one that depends on partnering with developers who understand local market dynamics and can execute efficiently.
Over 11 GWh under construction
"This transaction validates our development approach, combining local market knowledge with rigorous technical execution to create institutional-quality assets," said César Izco, Partner at Navacant, whose continued involvement through the development phase is intended to ensure project delivery meets the high standards BW ESS expects.
European regions and industry push for tougher "Made in Europe" rules
BW ESS has been active in Spain since 2025 and operates projects in the United Kingdom, Australia, Italy, Germany and Sweden. Worldwide, the company has more than 540 MWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in operation, with around 11 GWh under construction and a development pipeline of several gigawatt-hours. (nhp)
