Solar Investors Guide #5 - Energy for cars and trucks

Putting paved-over land to work

The number of electric cars is growing worldwide, and growing fast. Making affordable charging power available means speeding up the rollout of charge points, on private land, in semi-public areas and in public spaces.

The same logic applies well beyond private cars. Company fleets, municipal fleets and even the military can cover their own land with solar carports, producing cheap, clean power in the process.

None of this is particularly complicated. It is simply a more sensible use of land, and it is already happening every day. In this issue, we show the clever ways companies are putting car parks and derelict land to work, in cities and in the countryside alike. Land is becoming a valuable asset, and solar power adds real value to it, whether on open parking areas, in multi-storey car parks or in garages.

In this issue:

  • Welcome to the bidirectional zone
  • The race to charge trucks at scale
  • Near-self-sufficient parking tower
  • Where car park solar projects go wrong
  • More than shade: solar carports at work
