Testing back sheets out in the field

This technique is now not only used in the laboratory, but also in the field using portable devices. All electromagnetic radiation influences the bonds of organic molecules. When infrared radiation is absorbed, the bonds are stimulated to oscillate (by near, middle and far infrared) and rotate (far infrared).

The molecular vibrations are detected by the FTIR instrument as absorption of radiation in the infrared spectrum. The degree of attenuation of each frequency is recorded as an absorption band in the spectrum. The stronger the absorption, the more intense the absorption bands are. A database of FTIR spectra for polymer materials is used to match the measured spectra. This allows critical back sheets to be identified quickly and clearly. (mfo)
