Polish developer bought its first solar farm project in Portugal

The farm, located near the historic city of Evora, will produce about 17,000 MWh per annum utilizing bifacial modules and single-axis trackers. The capacity generated will be sufficient to meet the needs of 7,700 households. The projected annual reduction in CO2 emissions will exceed 5,300 tonnes, which is equivalent to 2,800 cars. The energy generated will be sold under the Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) without any support scheme.

Highest solar irradiation in continental Europe – subsidy-free PV plants

“In the coming years, we plan to build a portfolio of 500 MW solar projects in such countries as Portugal, Spain, Italy and Hungary. The purchase of the first solar farm project in Portugal is a part of our foreign expansion strategy. The choice of this country is not accidental. This is where R.POWER opened its first foreign branch. In addition, the southern region of Portugal, Alentejo, has the highest level of sunshine in continental Europe. This makes it possible to build a farm without any subsidies, selling energy on the free market”, says Przemek Pieta, co-founder and CEO of R.POWER.

Growing interest in PPAs in Portugal

The total capacity of photovoltaic farms in Portugal reached over 800 MW at the end of 2019. This year alone, another several hundred MW is expected to be launched in the country, largely due to the growing interest in the PPA formula. According to the plans, the capacity of systems connected to the grid is to reach about 9 GW in 2030.

Operating in the entire PV value chain

R.POWER has a PV market share in Poland of 20%, according to the company. In the recent years, it has won solar auctions for a total installed capacity of almost 200 MW. In Poland alone, the company is developing a portfolio of PV power plants of over 800 MW. R.POWER operates in the entire value chain on the PV market – it develops power plant projects, build plants and provides professional management, service and maintenance (O&M) services for solar farms via its affiliated company – NOMAD Electric.
