The funding aims to accelerate the development of European gigafactories, with the selected projects expected to reach a combined annual capacity of around 56 GWh by 2030. Key recipients include ACC (France), which will establish five production lines for NMC cells under the ACCEPT project; Verkor (France), which will double production capacity at its Dunkirk facility to 16 GWh under the AGATHE project; and LG Energy Solution (Poland), which will scale up production of 46‑millimetre cylindrical cells as part of the 46inEU initiative.
Lyten acquires Northvolt battery plants in Sweden and Germany
At the same time, progress is being made upstream and across new supply‑chain entry points. In Germany, Vulcan Energy has received the final permit to begin construction of its commercial lithium extraction facility in Landau. The approval completes the full permitting process for both the geothermal and extraction components, allowing Vulcan to move from planning into construction in the near term. The project stands as one of the most advanced examples of a European lithium operation and strengthens the case for a locally sourced, low‑carbon lithium supply for the continent’s battery industry.
HoloSolis raises over €220 million for 5 GW plant
In the Western Balkans, ElevenEs has also advanced development plans, signing a Joint Declaration of Support with the European Commission and Serbia’s Development Agency during the EU Western Balkans Investment Forum in Tirana. The declaration acknowledges the role of the Subotica plant in supporting Europe’s e‑mobility and energy‑storage value chains, underlining the growing integration of the region into Europe’s wider battery ecosystem, according to NGO New AutoMotive.
