Donating photovoltaic installations for Ukrainian schools and hospitals

Energy Act for Ukraine Foundation and Menlo Electric will jointly develop solar and storage installations for schools and hospitals in Ukraine. In the first phase of cooperation, they will equip up to 10 Ukrainian hospitals and schools with solar plants with a total output of 300 kilowatts. The projects are intended to ensure electricity supply to critical needs of schools as well as surgery and intensive care units of hospitals through the hybrid solar power and energy storage systems. The Foundation also organizes an elective course on sustainability at every school within the campaign 100RESforSchools.

The Foundation's first project was completed in November 2022 at the Irpin Academic Lyceum `Mriya`, in cooperation with BSW-Solar, the German Solar Association and the German Federal Foreign Office.

Two schools and a children’s hospital

For the second site, carried out jointly with Menlo, the Foundation selected Irpin Lyceum No.1 specializing in arts. The school was damaged during the occupation of Irpin city in the spring of 2022, when it became a shelter for pupils, parents, and teachers during the severe shelling of the city. The installation is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2023. There is also a third project scheduled in the pipeline, a children’s hospital in Chernihiv region. The installation of solar modules and energy storage systems will secure the safe supply of electricity to the neonatal intensive care unit of the hospital.

In order for a school to qualify for the program, it must meet several criteria. Each of the chosen schools needs to have more than 500 pupils that are studying onsite. The facility should be away from the front line and needs to have a bomb shelter.
