Formular E:

Mercedes pulls the plug on electric racing series

Only the weekend before last, at the race in Berlin, Nyck de Vries won Formula E with the Mercedes-EQ team. Now Mercedes-Benz announced the strategic decision to withdraw from Formula E. The reason: all resources should now be reallocated in favour of a “faster ramp-up of electrification”.

“The accelerated transformation of our company, our products and our services towards a zero-emission and software-driven future means that Daimler must concentrate fully on its core activities,” says Markus Schäfer, member of the Board of Management at Daimler and responsible for Group Research at Mercedes-Benz.

A sale of the team is being considered

This included the development of three new electric architectures to be introduced in 2025. “For this reason, Mercedes is redistributing its resources from the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship programme in order to implement the knowledge gathered there in product development for the series,” the carmaker explained.

In future, the company will concentrate on Formula 1 in racing. While Mercedes-Benz will definitely leave Formula E at the end of Season 8, the team management has begun to examine whether the team commitment can be continued in the future. A sale to new owners is also being considered. (nhp)
