US scientist develops switchable solar glass

American researchers have developed a glass that both provides shade and generates electricity – and only when the sun is actually shining. The group led by Lance Wheeler, a researcher at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), has developed this solution based on the class of semiconductor materials called the perovskites. It is a hybrid of organic methylammonium compounds and inorganic lead halides, which can be made very thin and above all transparent. The perovskites also have the advantage that they can potentially achieve higher efficiencies than crystalline modules as well as coping well with partial shade.
