Sweden: Considerable increase of installed PV power plants

By the end of 2021 there were hence 92 359 grid-connected solar power plants in Sweden, and the current total installed power amounts to 1 586 MW (approximately 1,6 GW).

Solar power plants produce almost as much power per year as a municipality the size of Gävle uses on a yearly basis. This would equal approximately 4 percent of the Swedish households’ power consumption during a year.

Rising electricity prices as important driver

Two factors that are contributing to the great interest in installing solar panels are presumably the fact that a lot of people want to contribute to climate change adaptation and that the prices of electricity have increased significantly lately, says Johan Harrysson, statistics administrator at the Swedish Energy Agency.

Last year’s statistics on grid-connected solar panels is more complete than statistics from former years. The reason for this is that nowadays there are a sufficient number of solar power plants around Sweden in order to present the statistics without disclosing information about specific households or companies.

Gothenburg is the municipality with the largest installed solar power at 58,4 MW, which is almost 3,7 percent of the total amount in Sweden. Gothenburg is also the municipality with the highest number of installed solar power plants during 2021, with a total power of 18,6 MW. The ten municipalities with the largest increase had a joint power of 330 MW

The region with the largest installed solar power per capita is Halland county with 277 Watt per person, followed by Södermannland County with 264 Watt/capita.

"It is certainly positive that the number of solar power plants are continuously increasing in Sweden“, commented Anna Werner, CEO of Svensk Solenergi."It's also a welcomed sight that there are so many solar power plants higher than 1 MW, in spite of our plants still being rather small in an international perspective“, she said.
