Nidec Conversion sets out its ESG roadmap to 2028

Nidec Conversion, an international provider of solutions for energy conversion, industrial automation, power quality and battery energy storage systems (BESS), has presented its first optimisation plan for ESG (environmental, social and governance).

The plan, running through to 2028, builds on a materiality analysis that outlines key priorities: reducing emissions in customer applications and company operations; supporting decarbonisation across the value chain; promoting a culture of sustainability, innovation, health and safety; creating social value at regional level; and strengthening trust through transparent, accountable governance with a mind to long-term impact.

ESG: The EU wants to be a pioneer

The company is aligning its efforts with the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) and will implement eight ESG targets through 48 strategic measures, of which 23 are environmental, 16 social and 9 related to governance, each mapped to one or more of the 14 Sustainable Development Goals. These targets will be embedded into day-to-day operations over a three-year period from 2025 to 2028.

Key issues climate change, biodiversity and water management

Nidec Conversion is advancing its environmental goals with a focus on climate action, biodiversity and water stewardship. The company aims to achieve carbon neutrality in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2040, and in Scope 3 by 2050, through targeted measures and a thorough reassessment of its supply chain. Initial targets include cutting Scope 1 and 2 CO₂ emissions by 42% by 2030, and reducing Scope 3 emissions by 25% compared to 2022 levels.

The transition will be driven by a rapid shift to renewable energy across Nidec Conversion’s operations, with the goal of meeting 50% of its total energy needs with renewable electricity by 2030.

Maximising energy efficiency

Nidec Conversion says it is working to improve the efficiency of energy systems as part of efforts to meet rising global demand. The company highlights component weight optimisation as a way to boost power density and cut energy use in technologies like converters. It has also set a target to reduce water consumption by one-third by 2028, citing investments in recycling and more efficient processes. Pollution control remains on the agenda, with measures in place to limit air pollutants. The company further claims all minerals used are conflict-free, backed by supply chain due diligence and transparency.

“Powering the Change, Driving Sustainability” is intended to bolster Nidec Conversion’s social impact by promoting a culture centred on health and safety, respect and equal opportunity. The initiative underscores the value of individual contributions across the company and its supply chain. Nidec Conversion has reaffirmed its commitment to occupational safety, setting a goal to eliminate fatal accidents and serious injuries, while fostering a proactive safety culture through staff engagement.

Support local communities

Nidec Conversion supports local development through educational programmes, community initiatives and strategic partnerships, aiming to make its social commitment visible to those it seeks to benefit. The focus lies on human rights, fair working conditions and the development of local communities, with the stated goal of ensuring equal opportunities across employment, business activity and service provision.
