EM Power Europe 2023

EU energy transition initiatives present themselves

European Technology and Innovation Platforms (ETIP) were created by the EU Commission as part of the new integrated roadmap for the Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET Plan) by bringing together a wide range of stakeholders and experts from the energy sector. The mission of the ETIP Smart Networks for Energy Transition (SNET) is to guide research, development and innovation (RD&I)) to support the energy transition in Europe. For example, one of the objectives is to develop a vision for RD&I for smart grids involving various stakeholders, address technical challenges of the energy transition, identify regulatory and financial barriers to innovation, and improve knowledge sharing.

The BRIDGE initiative, which started under the EU's Horizon 2020 research & innovation funding program and will continue under Horizon Europe, brings together R&I projects in the areas of smart grids, energy storage, islands and digitalization. The aim is to create a structured view of cross-cutting issues that arise in the demonstration projects and to promote knowledge exchange to increase the impact of projects to accelerate the energy transition.

Presented EU projects and initiatives

The following projects, which focus on energy and demand-side management, prosumer engagement, sector coupling, smart grids, and new business models, among others, are presenting.

Iflex Intelligent Assistants for Flexibility Management. The goal is to make it as easy as possible for consumers to participate in demand response programs and adjust their own consumption. To this end, an intelligent, personal software assistant is being developed.

RESONANCE - Replicable and efficient solutions for optimal cross-sector energy management . A software platform for plug-and-play deployment of standards-compliant Customer Energy Managers (CEM), Resource Managers (RM) and their aggregation solutions is being developed.

GIFT: Geographic Island Flexibility. To decarbonize the energy mix of European islands such as Hinnøya (Norway) or Procida (Italy) through holistic energy management, renewable generation and innovative storage solutions.

iPLUG: Development of novel power electronics based on multiport converters for the integration of renewable energy, energy storage systems and loads while improving the performance and resilience of modern distribution grids.

ebalance-plus: smart grid solutions to increase flexibility, resilience, and market options for the distribution grid . The focus is on the development of an energy management platform.

InterConnect: Interoperable solutions to connect smart homes, buildings and grids. Seven pilot projects will test energy management that is user-oriented and market-driven.

SENDER: Sustainable consumer engagement and demand reduction. New energy services will be developed with user or customer involvement.

RENergetic: Sustainable urban "energy islands" with community participation. Demonstrated in three pilot projects, such as the new docks in Ghent (Belgium) and a campus in Poznan (Poland).

FLEXIGRID: Interoperable solutions for more flexible, reliable and cost-efficient distribution networks. Developed and tested technologies include control software, advanced smart meters, and simulation models for thermal energy storage.
