Venue wanted for Solar Decathlon Europe

The Energy Endeavour Foundation (EEF) is looking for a venue for the Solar Decathlon Europe (SDE) in 2025 or 2026. "Despite ongoing discussions with potential European institutions and interest groups, there is currently no city that could host the next SDE," writes the organiser of the student competition for the development of solar and energy-efficient buildings.

Race for venue still open

The reason given by the EEF is that the cities that have applied to host the competition so far are unable to secure the resources required to organise the competition in a timely manner.

The race for the next SDE venue is therefore still open: Interested cities can find out what requirements the venue must fulfil on the EEF website. There you will also find information on how to get in touch with the organisers.

Designing buildings of the future

The European version of the Solar Decathlon has been organised since 2010. There have been five competitions so far. The most recent SDE took place in Wuppertal in 2022. However, Madrid, Versailles and Budapest have also hosted the prestigious competition.

The aim is for various teams of students from universities around the world to design a building in terms of architecture, energy efficiency, the use of renewable energy and resource efficiency and construct it on the competition site. The focus is also on the actual realisation of the designs.

Ten different competitions

These student teams will compete with their houses in ten different disciplines, such as energy performance, architectural design, economic feasibility and others. The team that ultimately scores the most points in all disciplines wins the overall competition. However, prizes are also awarded to the winners in each individual discipline. (su/mfo)
